A LITTLE KNOW-HOW

About this tool

Compare file and storage sizes without mixing decimal and binary units. Decimal kB, MB and GB use powers of 1,000; binary KiB, MiB and GiB use powers of 1,024.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Enter a non-negative data size.

  2. 2

Select the original unit and desired unit, checking decimal versus binary labels.

  3. 3

Convert and see the equivalent number of bytes.

Questions, answered

Why is a GB different from a GiB?

One gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. One gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes. The different bases explain many apparent size differences between storage labels and software displays.

What is the difference between b and B?

A lowercase b means bit and an uppercase B means byte. One byte contains eight bits. Fractional bytes can appear when converting a bit count that is not divisible by eight.
